Big Farmhouse Charm

This table was a beast to assemble but it’s a fantastic nucleus of our home.

The largest project that I’ve tackled so far - a 72” x 38” farmhouse table using reclaimed wood from Longleaf Lumber in Cambridge, MA. We wanted a statement piece for our dining room when we moved to our condo, particularly to celebrate that we had a dining room for the first time in our lives together!

The project began with determining the dimension of the top to fit our dining room. We wanted to be able to sit as many people as we could, without overwhelming the room and crowding the pathways around the table to the living room and kitchen. Once we had a ballpark size, it was time for my favorite part: we head to Longleaf Lumber for the wood to make the top. Longleaf is a wonderland of reclaimed wood and you never know what you’ll find each time you go.

We landed on four boards with amazing character and warmth. To support the top, we picked up a few reclaimed fence wind braces for the center posts of each leg panel, and we were off!

I used 48” pipe clamps to glue the table top boards together, and while that was set up, I began assembling the base structure with the wind braces and supplemental wood from Home Depot. While I got to work assembling the base and coming up with a matching plan for the live edge bench, Alison went on the hunt for chairs to bring the whole thing together. We ended up going with a set of chairs with the cross back to mirror the farmhouse style of the table and bench and we could not have been more pleased with the outcome!
